The Moab Chicken Corners is known for its breathtaking scenery, heart-pounding drops, and rugged terrain that commands respect. The trail features narrow ledges and steep descents, making it a true test for any overlanding vehicle. Prepping for the Moab Chicken Corners

When preparing the electric vehicle Rivian R1T for the challenging terrain of the Moab desert, careful consideration was crucial. The R1T, equipped with the Adventure Package, quad-motor drive unit, and all-terrain tires, offers distinct advantages, including instant torque and a low center of gravity due to its under-floor battery pack. The quad-motor setup provides exceptional control and power distribution to each wheel, significantly enhancing its off-road capabilities.

While the Rivian R1T offers a 300+ mile range on highways, its range is reduced in off-road mode. However, the R1T’s battery is engineered to handle the unpredictable demands of off-roading, even in the 100-degree desert heat, which provided me with a reassured level of confidence. Since the Chicken Corners, is an out-and-back trail totaling approximately 120 miles round trip from my starting point, there were no special precautions needed, as I planned to fully charge my Rivian at my campsite before starting my electric adventure.

The Electric Adventure Begins

As the sun rose, I began my electric adventure to the Moab Chicken Corners from the peaceful Kayenta Campground at Dead Horse Point State Park. After making sure that my Rivian R1T was fully charged from the 50 amp service at my campsite, I was ready to go. The nearly 36-mile drive to the start of the trail near Kane Creek was smooth. While the transition from asphalt to dirt was seamless as the Rivian’s all-wheel quad motor drive unit confidently handled the changing surfaces. As I continued, the initially wide paths of the trail gradually narrowed into ledges, offering a glimpse of the challenges ahead. This marked the beginning of an adventure that promised breathtaking scenery and thrilling excitement.

Challenges Along the Chicken Corners

The Moab Chicken Corners demands full attention and skillful navigation. Every twist, turn, and slope tested the Rivian R1T’s capabilities and my courage. A narrow stretch of the trail with a steep drop on one side was especially thrilling. Here, the R1T’s precise steering and low-end torque were crucial, allowing for careful navigation of the narrow path with a surprising level of control given the vehicle’s size.

However, the challenges extended beyond just handling tight spaces. The sandy washes and rocky inclines demanded power and traction, both of which the R1T delivered in abundance. The suspension proved its worth by raising the truck for increased ground clearance over obstacles and lowering it for improved stability on flat sections. This combination of power, precision, and adaptability made overlanding the Chicken Corners not just possible but exhilarating.

Scenic Highlights of the Chicken Corners

During this journey, the rugged natural beauty of Moab was on full display. One particularly memorable moment occurred when I stopped at a high vantage point overlooking the Colorado River as it carved its way through the canyon below. The profound silence, punctuated only by the distant call of a bird or the whisper of the wind, was truly mesmerizing. Moments like this highlight the unparalleled beauty and serene experience of overlanding in an electric vehicle. The ability to immerse in nature, free from the disruption of engine noise, was refreshing and soul-cleansing.

Sustainability on the Trail

Equally important was preparing for sustainability. Overlanding in an electric vehicle is not just about conquering rugged terrain; it’s about minimizing environmental impact. To achieve this, I followed principles that ensure the preservation of Moab’s fragile desert ecosystem: staying on designated trails and leaving no evidence of my presence. By adhering to these guidelines, I contributed to the conservation of these natural wonders, ensuring they remain pristine for future adventurers.

Rivian R1T’s Performance

After miles of challenging terrain, the Rivian R1T emerged as a capable and resilient off-roader. Its electric powertrain not only tackled everything Chicken Corners threw at it but did so with a level of refinement and control that sets a new standard for off-road adventures. The R1T’s performance was a revelation, proving that electric vehicles can not only compete with traditional off-roaders but in many ways, surpass them.
